Symondsbury Estate Wedding Photographer | A Sunny Wedding at the Tithe Barn
A beautiful wedding at the Symondsbury Estate, celebrating Amy and Scott at the wonderful Tithe Barn. And what a day for it. The end of May turned up the sunshine and temperatures, giving us a proper taste of summer in the Dorset countryside.
If you’re looking for a Symondsbury Estate wedding photographer, this is a little look at Amy and Scott’s wedding day, from the morning preparations to the dancing in the evening. A gorgeous barn venue, lovely people, thoughtful little details and plenty of sunshine. What’s not to like?
My approach to wedding photography is relaxed and documentary-led. I want to capture the day as it actually felt, with all the big moments, little interactions and unexpected bits of magic that make a wedding yours. Amy and Scott’s day had plenty of all three.
Getting ready for a wedding at Symondsbury Estate
The morning began at two separate locations, with Scott getting ready at Battys Barn at Lower Moorbath Farm, while Amy was over at Barton Cottage in Symondsbury.
There’s always a lovely sense of anticipation during the preparations. The final bits of getting ready, the excitement building, friends and family coming together, and those moments when it suddenly dawns on everyone that this is actually happening.
Amy had planned a first look with her bridesmaids and another with her dad, which are exactly the sort of personal moments I love to photograph. There’s no need to manufacture anything when the emotion is already there. It’s simply a case of giving people the space to enjoy the moment while I quietly document it.
Those reactions, whether it’s laughter, happy tears or someone trying very hard not to cry, often become some of the most meaningful photographs from the whole day.
Getting married at the Tithe Barn, Symondsbury Estate
The ceremony took place at the Tithe Barn, a beautiful wedding venue on the Symondsbury Estate in Dorset.
Barn weddings have a character all of their own. The architecture gives the setting a real sense of occasion, while the countryside surroundings create a relaxed atmosphere that’s perfect for a wedding with family and friends. The Tithe Barn is a brilliant setting for couples who want somewhere with plenty of character without losing that warm, welcoming feeling.
And with the sunshine absolutely showing off at the end of May, we were treated to a beautiful day for celebrating.
The ceremony itself was followed by drinks and time for everyone to catch up. This is one of my favourite parts of a wedding to photograph. Once the formalities are over, people can relax into the day, and that’s when all those lovely candid moments start to happen.
Hugs, laughter, conversations between old friends and family members meeting for the first time. There’s always something going on if you take a step back and look for it.
Relaxed wedding photography in the Dorset sunshine
One of the things I love about photographing weddings at venues like the Symondsbury Estate is the opportunity to let the surroundings become part of the story.
The Tithe Barn has plenty of character of its own, and the surrounding countryside offers a beautiful setting for portraits. Rather than dragging couples away from their guests for ages, I prefer to keep portraits relaxed and relatively short, making the most of the light and the location without turning the day into a photoshoot.
The rest of the time, I’m looking for the moments that happen naturally. The reactions during speeches, the laughter around the tables, the little glances between couples and the friends who are already halfway to the dance floor before the evening has even started.
That’s what documentary wedding photography is all about for me: photographs that bring you back to how the day actually felt, rather than just how everything looked.
Speeches, cake and the little details
After the ceremony and drinks reception, everyone settled in for the wedding breakfast, with catering by High Grange Devon.
The speeches came first, followed by the meal and one of those little details that I particularly liked about Amy and Scott’s plans. Rather than making a big announcement and gathering everyone around for a formal cake-cutting moment, they had their cake served as pudding.
No grand production, just cake for everyone to enjoy. A perfectly reasonable approach, if you ask me.
It’s a good reminder that your wedding doesn’t have to follow a rigid list of traditions. You can keep the bits you love, ditch the ones that don’t feel like you and do things your own way.
Those personal decisions are often what make a wedding memorable, and I love photographing days that feel like a genuine reflection of the couple.
From the Tithe Barn to the dance floor
As the afternoon moved into evening, more guests arrived and the celebrations continued.
With DJ Craigy on the decks, it was time for the first dance and the start of the evening party. After a beautiful day in the sunshine, everyone could finally let their hair down.
I’m always happy when the dancing gets going. It’s a chance to capture a completely different side of the day: the questionable moves, the enthusiastic singing, the friends who seem to have been waiting all afternoon for their favourite song and the wonderfully chaotic photographs that come from a full dance floor.
These are often the images that bring a wedding gallery to life. They might not be the photographs you’d put in a frame above the fireplace, but they’re the ones that make you laugh when you’re looking back through everything years later.
And that’s the point. Your wedding photographs should tell the whole story, not just the polished bits.
